Fiesta Days June 2022

An Open House was held on June 18th 2022 to coincide with the West Point Grey Fiesta Days. Visitors were able to try both bowling and croquet, and there were also two prize competitions. It was wonderful that a rainy morning turned into a dry and warmer afternoon!

Awards Day 2021

On a very cloudy, almost rainy, day (Sun 26 Sep), we held our closing luncheon and awards day.  Due to COVID restrictions, it was not feasible to host a potluck meal as in other years.  Instead we had a professionally catered lunch from Vera’s in Kitsilano:

Lots of awards were handed out.  See 2021 In-Club Tournament Results for the full list.  Our bowler of the year this year was Elaine Rolston.  Here she is, receiving her trophy for winning the Women’s Singles tournament:

Barbara Williams Mixed Fours Tournament 2021

On Sun 5 Sep, we held the Barbara Williams Mixed Fours Tournament.  Congratulations to the winning teams:

  1. Josephine Lee, Fred Fong, Freeman Watt, Shirley Lai
  2. Heng Lee, Kelvin Lai, Cary Ip, Gigi Chan
  3. Paul Lee, James Chen, Clement Law, Lisa Cheung
  4. Charles Hou, Russell Boyd, Susan Boyd, Cynthia Hou

The tournament was a great success.  The weather held up.  Many players commented on how much they enjoyed it.  Players were also very appreciative of the opportunity to play an interclub tournament again after the COVID hiatus.  There were a lot of tight heads; the bowling looked to be at quite a high level.  Our own club’s Charles Hou team, but for a game-losing bad end, could have come in 1st place.

WPG Men’s and Women’s Novice Singles tournaments 2021

On Tue evening 31 Aug 2021, both men’s and women’s singles tournaments for novices were held.  This was the first time since 2019 that these tournaments were held.  We were not allowed to welcome new members (i.e., novices) in 2020 due to COVID restrictions.  The winners were as follows:

Novice Men’s Singles

  1. Norman Osatuik
  2. Paul Klintworth

Novice Women’s Singles

  1. Ruth Mennie
  2. Melanie Klintworth

Andy Reid Mixed Triples Tournament 2021

On Sat 28 Aug 2021, we held the Andy Reid Mixed Triples Tournament.  This, our final nonnovice intraclub tournament of the year, was played in perfect weather.  The quality of bowling was quite high.  Everybody bowled well, winners and losers alike.  There were some high scoring games, but we also had a notable low score: 7-5, i.e., 12 one-point ends.  This was between Jean McTavish’s team and David Crowe’s team. Congratulations to the winning teams:

  1. Elaine Rolston, Andy Byrne, Shirley Grimmett
  2. Kathie Draeseke, Diane Stanger, Ruth Mennie
  3. David Crowe, Bob Burrows, Sandra Webster

Men’s & Women’s Singles Tournaments 2021

On Sat 21 Aug 2021, both men’s and women’s singles tournaments were held.  The winners were as follows:

Men’s Singles

  1. Ken Sherlock
  2. Mark Dix-Cooper
  3. Charles Hou

Women’s Singles

  1. Elaine Rolston
  2. Margit Hunt
  3. Kathie Draeseke

These tournaments were played under cloudy but dry skies–good weather indeed for lawn bowling.  There were a lot of close games; the number of blowouts was much less than usual.  The calibre of bowling was quite high.  Apart from congratulating the winners, special “longevity” mentions must be given to Kathie Draeseke & George Bangham.  They each bowled in excess of 50 ends.

New Members Event 2021

We held our first-ever event (bowling+social) just for new members on Sat 7 Aug.  The new members bowled Australian pairs.  This gave many of them their first taste of the skip role.  Coaches were also present to help them out with tactics etc.  Feedback was very positive, and we hope to hold the event again next year.

100th Anniversary Celebration

The grounds of West Point Grey looked uncommonly festive on Aug 2. Balloons graced the clubhouse; gowned, hatted ladies and dapper gentlemen circulated among the crowd while old (some VERY old!) and new members gathered to celebrate our first 100 years as a club!

Lunch was served (yes…served!) to guests under small pavilions while they listened to Charles Hou’s history of the club and remarks from three civic visitors. Time capsule contents were on display in the clubhouse along with all sorts of other club-related memorabilia. Fun bowling events both preceded and followed the festivities and were thoroughly enjoyed by both participants and spectators.

It was a marvelous, well-planned day which set the bar very high for the WPGLBC bicentennial!

Fleming Mixed Pairs Tournament 2021

  1. Russell Boyd, George Bangham
  2. Elaine Rolston, Bob Burrows
  3. Jean McTavish, Andy Byrne
